Free browser video editor

Cut it, caption it, convert it. Without uploading a thing.

Split clips, drop the silence, crop for vertical, change the speed, put text on screen and lay music underneath, then save one video or a GIF. Your browser's own hardware encoder does the work, so the files never leave your device.

How the video editor works

A free browser video editor for trimming, joining, resizing and converting. Common questions:

Is my video uploaded?

No. Decoding and encoding both run in this tab using the browser's built-in video engine. The only network requests are for this page and its own code. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.

Which files can I open?

MP4, MOV and M4V, which covers phone and camera recordings. Output is MP4 with H.264, or WebM with VP9 or AV1.

How long can a video be?

The file is held in memory while you work, so this suits clips and social videos rather than feature-length footage. A few hundred megabytes is comfortable on a typical machine.

How long does an export take?

Usually a fraction of the clip's length, because the encoder is hardware-backed. AV1 is the exception and is much slower than H.264.

Can I join clips of different sizes?

Yes. Everything is drawn into one output frame, either fitted inside with bars or cropped to fill, so mixed sources end up consistent.

How do I cut something out of the middle?

Put the playhead where you want the cut and press Split here. That leaves two clips, and you can trim or delete either one. Cut silence does the same thing by itself wherever the sound drops away.

How do I make a landscape video vertical?

Press Crop on the clip, pick 9:16, and drag the box over the part worth keeping. Set the output size to vertical and only what sits inside the box is used.

Can I aim for a file size?

Yes. Choose a size under Quality and the bitrate is worked out from the length of the timeline. If the first attempt lands over, a second pass corrects it, which doubles the time.

Can I add captions?

Add text by hand, or import a .srt or .vtt file and every line arrives with its timings already set. The text is drawn into the picture, so no player can switch it off.

Why is my GIF so large?

A GIF stores every frame as its own picture and holds only 256 colours, so it is far bigger than the same clip as a video. Keep it short, a few hundred pixels wide, and at a low frame rate.

What happens to the audio?

Each clip keeps its own sound, with its own level and fades, and any clip can be muted. A music track can be laid underneath and ducked so speech stays on top. Changing a clip's speed moves its pitch with it, the way fast motion normally sounds.
